History
Established in 1988
within the walls of St. Paul Community Baptist Church, Sigma Mu Upsilon is a Greek-lettered society for teenagers aged 12-18.
Fashioned after the Divine Nine Black Greek-Lettered Organizations found on college campuses, Sigma Mu Upsilon instills these
same basic principles of discipline & dedication in our youth. Yokefellows in Excellence was born from the realization
that the children lacked college preparation and consequently had limited college/career options. This realization led
a concerned parent to meet with Rev. Dr. Johnny R. Youngblood, the Senior Pastor of the St. Paul Community Baptist Church,
on this topic. This meeting resulted in another meeting; this time between the parent and the then Director of St. Paul's
Youth Ministry, Rev. Douglas A. Slaughter, to deliberate, pray, & seek God's guidance and answer to this dilema. The answer
came in the form of an October sermon preached by Rev. Youngblood from Lamentations 3:27. This scripture reads: It
is good for a man, that he bear his yoke in his youth. Dr. Youngblood stressed the point that
dedication to education, spritual growth, & responsibility are virtues that need to be adopted while one is young. Hence
Yokefellows in Excellence was conceived.
Rev. Slaughter, being a scholar
of the Greek language, researched the Greek-letters parallel to Yokefellows in Excellence and christened the newly formed
society Sigma Mu Upsilon. Today, Sigma Mu Upsilon has a membership of well over 300 frats & sorors consisting of both
teenagers and adults and chapters in 3 states. Yokefellows also hosts annual toy and coat drives, career/college fairs, PSAT/SAT
prep, & performs at collegiate & community step contests and exhibitions.
